Ep. 74 - SW Researcher and Ally Tamara O'Doherty (Pt 1/2)

Welcome back to 50 PLUS A TIP Podcast and you guys are in for a treat! This episode Riley and I sit down with the extremely knowledgeable, SWer ally, and absolute powerhouse Tamara O’Doherty. Tamara is a lecturer in the School of Criminology at Simon Fraser University (the #1 university in Canada for criminology), with several research projects and publications related to the impacts of criminalization, victimization in commercial sex, legal analyses of human trafficking, and other human-rights and knowledge production publications. Prior to her academic involvement, Tamara spent decades working along side sex workers and other sex worker allies, primarily in Vancouver's Downtown East-side, and during the height of the missing women's crisis, throughout the Pickton trial and its related media frenzy, through the 2010 Olympics, the BC provincial Inquiry into the missing women's crisis, and through the Bedford and SWUAV legal cases as they each made their way through the court system.  If that intro is any indicator - we had a LOT to discuss this episode, so we had to break it up into 2 PARTS. This first part of the interview we cover: What is the current SW research showing us? Why are there so many misunderstandings and so much misinformation about SW? Is s3x trafficking a real concern? What is the Bedford case, Bill c36, PCEPA and what are their implications? What are some legal changes that should occur and what would the desired results be? And from a research standpoint - are there benefits to commercial sex? Once you’re done learning about all that, head over to PART 2 of this interview where we ask Tamara all your listener questions!

About the Podcast

50 Plus a Tip
A podcast for strippers and open minded hoes
“How much is a dance?” Well... it’s “$50 PLUS A TIP!”

Two stripper best friends sharing the highs and (b)lows of their experience in the adult entertainment industry, with some help from special guests along the way.

While harmful, incorrect stigmas sadly surround the sex industry, Danica and Riley trust that using their podcast platform to share their own experiences and give a voice to others along the way, they can give “outsiders” a glimpse of the real world of adult entertainment and show everyone that they can own their sexuality proudly (and sometimes even profit off of it)!

About your hosts

Danica

Profile picture for Danica
Danica is a sarcastic, straightforward, sex-postive feminist with a passion for topics that some may consider “taboo.” With a psychology degree under her belt, a public speaker/ university guest lecturer, a devoted sex workers advocate and a successful career as an exotic dancer - she knows some stuff!

Danica lives her life by two philosophies: 1) it’s better to have a life of “oh well”s than “what if”s and 2) be unapologetically you! Her years of experience as a sex worker have given her a passion and drive to do what she can to eliminate the dangerous stigma that currently surrounds the sex industry. She is confident that sharing her stories as an active sex worker can do just that - show women (and men) that they can own their sexuality proudly (and sometimes even profit off of it)!

Riley

Profile picture for Riley
Riley is a down-to-earth, career dancer with over seven years in the industry. Originally from New Zealand and now based in Canada, her path began as a topless poker dealer and quickly grew into a dynamic career as an exotic dancer, dominatrix, and cam model. With a degree in statistics and currently pursuing a bookkeeping certificate, Riley plans to use her education to help others in the industry navigate their finances while challenging the stigma that surrounds sex work. A lifelong learner with a love for travel, she sees her career not just as a job, but as a platform to advocate, educate, and celebrate the freedom of owning one’s sexuality.
