Ep. 122 - Interview: Joanne House Mom & Dancing in the 80s - 00s

Today we are joined by Joanne (@missjoannesfinishingschool). Jo was a professional dancer appearing in Casino review shows, tv commercials, cruise ships, and industrial & promotional shows in the 80's, 90's and early 2000's. Which means she danced in clubs back when the clubs were referred to as go-go bars and then called gentleman's clubs. After retiring from dancing, Jo worked as a house mom at Delilah's for almost 20 years and founded their shows & dance-team programs. She also developed the contests in to what they are today… Legendary! Jo is currently retired and happily married, residing with her husband, 4 resident rescue cats, her rescue dog and foster kitties. This episode we discuss: the difference between go-go dancing and ex0tic dancing; the changes Jo has seen over the 3 decades her dancing career spanned; how the dancers and the clientele have changed over the years; how the 90s Microsoft / Apple tech bubble burst of 2000/2001 and the infamous 2008 crash impacted the str!pclub; her experience working as a house mom and more ! While harmful, incorrect stigmas sadly surround the sex industry, Danica and Riley trust that using their podcast platform to share their own experiences and give a voice to others along the way, they can give “outsiders” a glimpse of the real world of adult entertainment and show everyone that they can own their sexuality proudly (and sometimes even profit off of it)!

About your hosts

Danica

Danica is a sarcastic, straightforward, sex-postive feminist with a passion for topics that some may consider “taboo.” With a psychology degree under her belt, a public speaker/ university guest lecturer, a devoted sex workers advocate and a successful career as an exotic dancer - she knows some stuff!

Danica lives her life by two philosophies: 1) it’s better to have a life of “oh well”s than “what if”s and 2) be unapologetically you! Her years of experience as a sex worker have given her a passion and drive to do what she can to eliminate the dangerous stigma that currently surrounds the sex industry. She is confident that sharing her stories as an active sex worker can do just that - show women (and men) that they can own their sexuality proudly (and sometimes even profit off of it)!

Riley

Riley is a down-to-earth, career dancer with over seven years in the industry. Originally from New Zealand and now based in Canada, her path began as a topless poker dealer and quickly grew into a dynamic career as an exotic dancer, dominatrix, and cam model. With a degree in statistics and currently pursuing a bookkeeping certificate, Riley plans to use her education to help others in the industry navigate their finances while challenging the stigma that surrounds sex work. A lifelong learner with a love for travel, she sees her career not just as a job, but as a platform to advocate, educate, and celebrate the freedom of owning one’s sexuality.
